Nearsighted vs. farsighted: what you need to know

Nearsighted (Myopia)

If you’re nearsighted, distant detail goes blurry. Negative-diopter lenses bend incoming light outward before it reaches your eyes, so far-away subjects like reefs, fish, and boats snap into focus. About 1 in 3 Americans are nearsighted. Correcting myopia also improves overall clarity across typical dive distances, not just β€œfar away.”

Farsighted (Hyperopia/Presbyopia)

If you’re farsighted, plus-diopter lenses aren’t only for close-up. They shift the focal point forward so the eye doesn’t have to work as hard. That small change in the angle of convergence helps your retina receive a sharp image across a wide range of distances: gauges at arm’s length, your buddy a few meters away, and the reef beyond. In short, farsighted RX masks improve overall clarity, not just close-up vision.

How RX lenses help overall?

Whether your correction is β€œminus” or β€œplus,” the lens is simply bending light in the direction your eyes need so the focal point lands on the retina. That brings the whole scene into focus across common dive and snorkel distances. The nearsighted/farsighted labels just indicate which way we’re bending the light, not a limit on what you’ll see clearly.

About rounding down your prescription

Underwater, the water layer and lens distance mean you don’t need the full spectacle power. Round your sphere power down toward 0 by about 0.50–0.75 diopters for most prescriptions. This applies to both nearsighted and farsighted RX dive masks and typically delivers sharp, comfortable vision for scuba diving and snorkeling without over-correction.

Allowed my daughter to snorkel and see everything!

Fantastic!

The last time I went snorkeling (more than 10 years ago) I wore contacts. At age 65, glasses only. I thought I was done snorkeling, until I found these! They worked perfectly! I could see the fish. And at around 80 bucks for the mask and a breather tube, it's a bargain. They charge like $25 to rent them at the beaches when you go on a cruise (and it is gross using something that was in someone else's mouth!) I highly recommend these if you are near-sighted and want to snorkel.
