What Actually Makes You Want to Breathe

It's a common assumption that the urge to breathe comes from running low on oxygen. In practice, it's mostly driven by something else: rising carbon dioxide (CO2) in your bloodstream. As CO2 builds up, your body signals discomfort and eventually an urge to breathe, well before oxygen levels become dangerously low. That urge is a built-in safety signal, not something to override or push through.

Hyperventilation and Why It's Unsafe

Breathing rapidly and deeply before submerging, sometimes done deliberately in an attempt to hold your breath longer, lowers CO2 levels in the blood more than normal breathing does.
