Exposure Protection & Staying Warm

Exposure protection is the gear that helps protect your skin from sun, wind, cooler water, rubbing, stings from jellyfish or other marine life, and cuts or scrapes from coral or rocks. For snorkelers, that can mean sunscreen, UPF clothing, rash guards, wetsuits, hoods, gloves, boots, or a mix of these depending on the place and conditions.

Sun Protection Comes First

Snorkelers often spend a lot of time near the surface, where sun exposure can be easy to underestimate. Covering skin is usually the simplest starting point.

A rash guard or other UPF-rated clothing is excellent because it can reduce how much sunscreen you need and help protect the back, shoulders, and arms while you float face-down. A hat, sunglasses, and shade still matter before and after you enter the water.

Exposed skin still needs sun protection. For uncovered skin, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and apply it about 15 minutes before entering the water, this gives it time to bind to skin instead of rinsing off in the first few minutes. Follow the product label for reapplication, most labels call for reapplying at least every two hours and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

Lips burn easily during a long face-down surface swim and are easy to forget, so a lip balm with SPF is worth packing alongside sunscreen.

Around reefs, choose reef-conscious sunscreen where practical. Some sunscreen UV-filter chemicals are being studied for potential effects on coral and marine organisms, while measured environmental concentrations and real-world ecological effects remain an area of ongoing research. Sunscreen is not the principal global cause of coral decline, but avoiding unnecessary chemical input around reefs is still a sensible precaution.

Follow local regulations. Mineral-based products using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can be a good option. Terms like "reef-safe", "coral-safe" or "reef-friendly" are not a regulated guarantee of zero environmental impact.

Rash Guards and Skin Coverage

Beyond sun protection, a rash guard also cuts down on rubbing and chafing from mask straps, fin straps, sand, and flotation gear, useful anywhere gear sits against skin for a long session, and especially at the back of the body, which takes both sun and strap contact during a surface snorkel.

Coverage also reduces the chance of jellyfish stings and coral or rock scrapes reaching skin, since a rash guard or wetsuit's fabric is generally tougher than bare skin against stinging cells or a sharp surface. This isn't full protection. Hands, feet, and the face are still commonly exposed, so gloves and booties matter in areas with jellyfish or sharp coral, and no coverage guarantees you won't be stung or scraped.

Coral cuts are worth avoiding beyond the pain, they carry a real infection risk from marine bacteria and embedded debris.

Choose a rash guard that fits comfortably without restricting shoulder movement. Loose fabric can bunch under gear, while fabric that is too tight can make movement uncomfortable.

Wetsuit Basics

A wetsuit slows heat loss mainly through the insulating neoprene and by limiting the circulation of cold water through the suit. A small amount of water normally enters between the suit and your skin and warms against your body. A good fit helps keep that water relatively still. If a suit is too loose and fresh cold water continually flushes through it, warmth is lost much faster.

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimeters. Thicker neoprene usually provides more warmth but can reduce flexibility. Thinner neoprene usually feels more flexible but provides less insulation.

Do not choose wetsuit thickness from air temperature alone. Water temperature, wind, session length, your personal cold tolerance, and how much you move all matter.

Wetsuit Fit

A wetsuit should fit snugly enough to reduce water flushing in and out. Snug does not mean constrictive.

Check the chest, waist, hips, arms, legs, and neck. A wetsuit or hood should not restrict comfortable breathing or swallowing, and it should not restrict normal head or shoulder movement. Numbness, tingling, circulation problems, or excessive neck pressure are all signs the fit is wrong.

If the suit gaps heavily, flushes constantly, or restricts normal movement, it may not be the right size or cut. The instructor message is simple: snug, not constrictive.

Other Exposure Gear

Depending on conditions, you may also consider:

  • Boots for warmth, foot protection, or open-heel fins.
  • Gloves were allowed and appropriate, for warmth and reduced risk from stings or sharp coral rather than for touching marine life.
  • A hood or vest for cooler water.
  • A lightweight cover-up or windbreaker for before and after the water. Wet skin loses heat fast in a breeze, so this matters even on a warm, sunny day once you're back on the boat or shore.

Always check local rules. Some areas restrict gloves or other gear because they can encourage touching reef or marine life.

Care After Use

Rinse exposure gear with fresh water after use. Salt, sand, sunscreen, and sweat can shorten the life of fabric, neoprene, seams, and zippers.

Dry gear in shade with good airflow. Avoid direct heat and strong sun when drying neoprene. Check periodically for tears, worn seams, or damaged zippers.
