Prescription Masks: Nearsightedness, Farsightedness & Lens Selection
If you use vision correction and want clearer vision underwater, a prescription mask may be worth considering, one that uses corrective lenses built into the mask itself.
This lesson explains the customer-facing basics: what the common prescription terms mean, what standard sphere-only mask lenses can and cannot do, how Oceans Optics approaches lens recommendations, and when to use the Lens Calculator instead of guessing.

What Is a Prescription Mask?
A prescription mask is a mask fitted with corrective lenses. Instead of wearing glasses inside a mask, which does not work with the seal, the correction is built into the mask lens system.
Some prescription masks use stock or interchangeable lenses in available powers. Some custom optical solutions can be made more specifically to a person's full prescription. The standard off-the-shelf lens system is usually simpler, but it also has limits.

Do You Need One?
If you use glasses or contact lenses on land, a standard mask may not give you the underwater vision you want. This is especially true if you want to read hand signals, see marine life detail, navigate comfortably, or avoid wearing contact lenses in the water.
If you already see clearly without correction, you may not need a prescription mask. In prescription language, no corrective power is often called plano, meaning 0.00 or no corrective power.
Nearsighted vs. Farsighted
Nearsightedness, also called myopia, usually means nearby objects are clearer than far-away objects. On many eyeglass prescriptions, nearsighted correction appears as a negative SPH value, such as -2.00.
Farsightedness, also called hyperopia, usually means nearby objects are harder to see clearly, though symptoms vary by person and age. On many eyeglass prescriptions, farsighted correction appears as a positive SPH value, such as +2.00.
If you are unsure whether your prescription is nearsighted or farsighted, look at the sign in front of the SPH value and confirm with your eye care professional.
Reading the Key Prescription Terms
Most prescriptions include several fields. The exact layout varies, but these terms are common.

SPH
SPH, or sphere, is the base spherical correction. A minus sign usually indicates nearsighted correction. A plus sign usually indicates farsighted correction.
CYL
CYL, or cylinder, describes astigmatism correction. Astigmatism is related to how the eye focuses light in different meridians. A full astigmatism correction also depends on AXIS.
AXIS
AXIS describes the orientation of the astigmatism correction. It matters to the full prescription. Do not treat AXIS as irrelevant just because a simple stock-lens mask system may not ask for it.
ADD
ADD is additional near power, often connected with presbyopia and reading or near-vision needs. ADD is not used in the standard distance-lens recommendation, but that does not mean near-vision needs are irrelevant underwater or that every kind of custom mask solution is unsupported.
What Standard Sphere-Only Mask Lenses Can and Cannot Correct
Standard stock prescription mask lenses are usually sphere-only. That means they correct spherical power, but they do not reproduce a full CYL plus AXIS astigmatism correction the way a full eyeglass prescription can.
That does not mean they are useless for people with astigmatism. It means expectations need to be clear. A sphere-only mask lens may improve underwater vision, but it is not the same as a full custom prescription lens that includes cylinder and axis.
Available lens powers also vary by mask model. Do not assume every mask supports every strength.
Spherical Equivalent and High Cylinder Prescriptions
In optical practice, spherical equivalent is a way to summarize a sphero-cylindrical prescription as a single spherical value (SPH plus CYL divided by 2). For prescriptions with a meaningful cylinder reading, Oceans Optics does use spherical equivalent, as one directional check to help confirm a recommendation is rounding toward the correct strength, not as an exact, standalone formula.
We don't rely on it alone because of underwater optics. Light bends differently through a flat mask lens and water than it does through eyeglasses or contact lenses in air, so a value calculated the way it would be for glasses does not automatically carry over underwater. How Oceans Optics Approaches Lens Selection
Oceans Optics lens guidance combines:

That last point is important. Oceans Optics-specific adjustment and rounding guidance is not presented as a universal optometric formula. It is Oceans Optics empirical guidance for selecting from available underwater mask lenses.
For customers, the practical step is simple: use the Lens Calculator rather than trying to recreate the recommendation yourself.

Different Prescriptions in Each Eye
Many people have different prescriptions in each eye. All current Oceans Optics prescription mask systems can use different supported sphere powers in the left and right eye, where those strengths are available for the chosen model. For example, Left -2.00 and Right -3.50 are supported when both powers are available for that mask.
If one eye needs no corrective power, that eye may be described as plano (0.00 / no corrective power).
Different strengths in each eye are supported. Different sign types in each eye are not supported in the standard interchangeable-lens setup. For example, Left -3.00 and Right +4.00 are not supported as a normal stock configuration because they combine one nearsighted/minus lens with one farsighted/plus lens in the same mask.
That does not mean every conceivable custom optical solution is impossible. Customers with opposite-sign prescriptions should contact Oceans Optics before ordering.
Fit and Prescription Are Separate Decisions
A correct lens strength does not make a mask fit your face. A comfortable fit does not guarantee that the lens strength is right.

Talk with an optometrist or eye care professional if you do not understand your prescription, have a complex prescription, have significant astigmatism, need near-vision correction, have eye-health concerns, plan to wear contact lenses while snorkeling, or are unsure whether a stock sphere-only lens is appropriate.
