Water is always moving. Some movement is gentle and easy to manage. Some movement can affect where you enter, where you exit, and how easy it feels to navigate.

Why This Matters

Currents can move you across the shore, away from where you planned to exit, or away from land. Recognizing moving water helps you make better decisions before entering. Rip currents caused the majority of the 47 surf zone fatalities recorded in the US so far this year, this isn't a theoretical risk.

This is primarily a conditions-awareness lesson, with the one core response worth knowing if a current does catch you.

What Is a Current?

A current is a stream of water moving in a consistent direction. Currents are influenced by environmental factors and can affect both safety and navigation.

In plain terms: a current is water with direction. If you ignore it, your planned route may not be the route you actually travel.

Three Current Types to Know

  1. Longshore Currents Longshore currents flow parallel to the shore. They are generated when waves hit the coastline at an angle.

  1. Rip Currents Rip currents are strong, narrow currents moving directly away from the shore. They commonly form at breaks in sandbars or near structures such as piers and jetties.

How to Spot a Rip Current

Rip currents can be hard to see, but there are real visual cues. Look for a channel where the waves aren't breaking the way they are on either side of it, or a patch of foam, seaweed, or discolored water moving steadily out past the surf line. If something about the water in front of you looks different from the water around it, treat that as a reason to look closer before entering.

Tidal Currents and Timing

Tides don't just change water depth, they also drive tidal currents, water moving in and out as the tide rises and falls. That movement is usually weakest during slack tide, the short window around high or low tide, and strongest in between. Aiming for slack tide is one of the simplest ways to reduce current risk, especially in channels, passes, and near points where currents run strong the rest of the time.

If You Get Caught in a Current

This lesson is mainly about awareness before you enter, but one response is too important to leave out entirely. If you're caught in a current moving you away from shore, do not swim directly against it, you will tire quickly and gain little ground. Stay afloat, signal for help, and swim parallel to the shore until you're free of the current, then swim back to shore at an angle. Once you're clear of the pull, it will not drag you under, it moves you out, not down.

This is the single most important fact to know, not a substitute for a full rescue or emergency-response course.
