Waves, Tides & Surge
Not all water movement is a current. Waves, tides, and surge each affect your snorkel differently, and understanding them helps you choose better timing and entry points. Waves
Waves are disturbances that travel across the water's surface, usually caused by wind. Their size depends on wind speed, how long it blows, and the distance it travels over open water. Near shore, waves can break and create a surf zone with turbulent, unpredictable water. Breaking waves are a common source of injury and disorientation during entries and exits, so approach wave-exposed areas with extra caution. Waves usually arrive in sets, groups of larger waves followed by a calmer lull that can last a minute or longer. Watching the water for a few minutes before entering helps you spot the pattern. Time your entry for the start of a lull rather than pushing through while a set is breaking, and aim to get past the surf zone before the next set arrives.
Tides
Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level, caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. Most coastlines see two high tides and two low tides each day, though the exact pattern and range vary by location. Tides matter for snorkeling because they change water depth, how strong nearby currents run, and sometimes visibility.
Tide height changes more than just how deep the water feels. Higher tide generally means more water over reef and rock, which can make entries and exits easier, though it can also submerge hazards that would otherwise be visible. Lower tide can expose rocks, coral, or sandbars, meaning a longer walk to reach swimmable water and more care needed to avoid contact with the bottom. Surge
Surge is the back-and-forth movement of water along the shoreline, driven by a combination of waves and tidal forces. It's often mild in sheltered bays and coves, but can become strong in exposed areas, especially when wave energy is high. Surge near rocks or reefs is worth extra respect, since being pushed and pulled repeatedly in a confined space raises the risk of injury or getting caught on something.
If surge does catch you near rocks or reefs, work with it rather than against it. Hold onto something stable, a line, an anchor, a solid rock, when surge pulls you back, and let it carry you forward when it pushes. If there's nothing to hold onto, keep steady, controlled movements rather than fighting it outright. Time any critical move, like climbing out near rocks, for the calmer window between surges rather than forcing it mid-surge.
Checking Conditions Before You Go
Waves, tides, and surge are all things you can check ahead of time. Check NOAA Tides & Currents (tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov) for US tide predictions, or Tideschart.com for locations outside the US. Check the local marine weather forecast for wind speed, direction, and storm systems, since wind is what drives wave size directly.
Mid-morning to mid-afternoon generally gives the best underwater visibility, low sun angles at sunrise and sunset make it harder to see into the water. And a few minutes watching the water from shore before you commit to an entry point tells you more than any forecast can.
